The Mind Lance

Trance
A broken mind and a chained soul scream out in agony as the mind is further crushed and the chains tighten,
A beautiful writhing of pain and anguish linger under the surface of a madman, an angry no one, plastered on the walls of his mind,
A constant shuffling in the dark that never ceases, caged inside his feeble head, curses falling on dead and deaf ears of hatred,
A searching for something that can be found, the illusion of grandeur that will surely never come, and the incredible longing,
An escape is all, just one, as he sits caged and demoned he rattles the bars and shakes his mind trying to get away, away, away from it all,
An impossibility they say that the madmen can never feel pain, that they can never escape that which they don't even fear,
A misconception, interlocking with their own fears leave uncaged madmen longing at unknown shores next to cages exploded and dead and gone,
A mad man taken for a madman caged and howling against the unbidden torture and misery for the end that will, can never come,
A closing of the mind a temporary release only for the moment but let the madman's moments last forever as he is for the now free,
A freedom he might never see or find again in the cage of no bars of no doors of no nothing but of nothing itself,
An excellent escape from the world that betrayed him that beguiled him that crushed and maimed him he is lost in a trance,

Chance
It moves him it shakes him the trance and opens him opens the cage if just for a single moment in time ready to snap shut,
It soothes him, makes him forget the pain forget the cage forget it all in a pure moment of complete blank ecstasy that is almost gone,
It cures him if only for the moment and gives him a glimpse of how it could have been how it all could have worked out,
It leaves him standing there, shivering naked in the dark when it has left him left him for an ever that will last forever,
It breaks him even more and leaves him worse than before before he went through it all all the newness and the cage,
It makes him relive it all once it is gone relive all the pain feel the mind crushing and feel the chains tighten and bruising,
It opens him up like a scalpel through the heart of the mind where everything collides together where everything connects,
It gives him something unexpected a gift a blessed forsaken gift a reason to keep on shaking the bars that aren't there,
It somehow pulls him deeper and deeper into the cage the bars the mindless blown misery that does not open for anyone but,
It changes him the madman into something more animal less human more or less savage and primal instincts rule the world shattering,
It also creates a hole an opening a tiny pinprick of its exit only for a split instant an escape a trivial but oh-so-opportunistic chance,

Dance
He sticks a finger in the chance and wriggles out and forces a bigger hole one that can be gaping without gaping that screams horrors silently,
He follows it out of the cage crawling limping running for something anything that can be found by hands still shaking in ecstasy in disbelief,
He stands on an unknown shore the cage wasted by his side the people passing by seeing him still bound and beaten inside,
He watches their blind glances his way as they walk around in giant and tiny circles to nowhere doing nothing,
He feels the coolness of the sun massaging his back his neck his exposed skin showing flashes of colour and gone again,
He remembers what had happened and how it had hurt and who it had affected and what exactly was its effect,
He plunders his mind for the answers that wouldn't would never come and then looked around at the shore,
He rejoices at the wrecked cage beside him and it flying away from him toward the next shore and the next cage,
He screams and sighs not of pain and sadness but of joy and saturation where he never felt it before anything,
He senses his body swaying and moving but doesn't know why none of the people walking past not seeing him are moving,
He moves and sways and nearly falls but crashes around in a staggerstep and is locked in a ragged and unsure dance,

Glance
But he staggers too hard and breaks a knee a leg a hip a foot a whatever-you-call-it in his confused dance,
But doesn't feel it until it's far too late far too gone far too nasty and unsure of what to do with it,
But can't stop the moving the lockstep the body's expression of itself in movement,
But grows angry at his feet that won't stop won't listen won't shut up won't give a damn about what he wants,
But is unable to do anything about it which makes him angrier and more furious at the feet and the whatever-you-call-it,
But staggers on growing more and more wild and angry with every step and touch and movement while nobody cares about a madman,
But the madman takes over the mad man and drives the feet closer and farther but closer to the cage,
But makes him fall a huge ball of rage into the cage his emotions eating him alive his flesh his bones his prowess,
But again the madman is helpless to stop it at all and angrily feels the pain and chains reach out to consume him,
But fights against them, against everything, against the infernal machine that threatened and tried to take him just for one thought,
But realises in that thought that the entire thing all of the emotions were just it letting him peek and have a glance.

1, in your bio, how did you make the words white? Green? Links? 2, I like your writing style. ;) And it feels like the site is really starting up again now that we have someone to write at least 30 snippets every day.

4:29PM EST   Nov 2nd, 2009 — by Sonny Guzman
Hello, I would like to thank you for the opportunity of writing on your Haiku Tree. I kinda got dumb with it, but it was just really cool lettin' my mind just run with whatever I was thinking at the time and challenging that I had to stick with the 5-7-5 & 7-7 format. PEACE

2:50PM EST   Jun 19th, 2009 — by Nina Zito
as you can guess from my response rate, it is a bit of both. financial and family responsibilities keep me away from all but guest-checking. i am a constant cookie clearer for work reasons so when i look at the site my signing on isn't automatic. i miss this site terribly. also there is a glitch (one of many as you know) in the code that keeps it from updating from my dormant status. poop.

now that is what i am talking about...WRITING. check out the activity on 5/13. LOVE to see you here.

I was wondering if you could prune my bud 'Where Are The Shoes Taking Me?' on Leif. I totally messed it up and need to redo it. Thanks, I'd appreciate that :)

7:58PM EST   Apr 29th, 2009 — by Lucky Clover
hello~. just dropped by to say, I'm sorry i put some un-haiku things on the Haiku/Renga branch. I make sure they all fit the rules now.

11:52AM EST   Apr 29th, 2009 — by Fullmoonblue
Aha. So the deadend means the branch's origins were snipped?

11:12AM EST   Apr 29th, 2009 — by Fullmoonblue
Hey there! Good to see you around again. Question: when reading backwards from your latest poems, there's an odd disconnection from the rest of the tree before the snippet entitled 'Bitten'... do you have any idea how that happened, or what the snippets prior to it are...? Just curious! Hoping you're well.

You mean writings outside of Million Monkeys?

4:22PM EST   Apr 27th, 2009 — by Laura
Sure thing Ryan! I'm not sure if I'll even get anywhere with it, but I just wanted to know that I was in the clear before I started writing anymore :) Thanks!

7:14PM EST   Apr 19th, 2009 — by Laura
Hi Ryan, I've been working on the tree that you started entitled 'Leif' and am really enjoying it. I was wondering if you didn't mind if I took what I've written for it and made it into a story of my own offsite. I wasn't sure if that would be considered taking your idea or not because I'd only be using what I've written. Let me know! And if not, I totally understand :) Thanks.

7:20AM EST   Mar 23rd, 2009 — by Gee Eff
Hi. You're in control of the haiku poetry tree, aren't you? I accidentally submitted a nonnet twice. The parent branch is http://www.1000000monkeys.com/snippet.html?branch=14472 I'd really appreciate it if you could prune one :) Thanks for that tree, the nonnet form really inspired me! :P

and thank you for lurking and checking in. we have had a very 'medical' 6 months. 4 different ERs and 3 different hospitals...lots of medicine and tests...seemed to touch all of us. but we are hoping for a much better spring. this sounds dire, but we are all okay now!

Hi! I was just asking- I can write pretty good poems, but I cannot, to save my life, write a good poem within those formats. I was just wondering if that was alright. You can check them out if you want.

10:32PM EST   Dec 13th, 2008 — by Bright Yellow
Hi Ryan, just a bit of a headache for you. Can you prune one of my snippets off your haiku tree. The internet went down just as I grafted it and when I got it up and going again my poem looked like it hadn't been grafted. Since it looked like it hadn't been grafted I changed the title to what I thought was a better title and hit the graft button. Net result the same poem twice with two different titles. Can you please prune the poem entitled 'Everything is out of season.' Sorry for the hassle and thanks in advance. Yellow.

10:15PM EST   Nov 14th, 2008 — by Hats
Well Ryan, I've stopped back in for a quick visit. Looks like you're still right up there towards the top x) Added a bit to your haiku tree, probably'll be it for today, but thought I'd drop by -The Hat formerly known as Cade

4:46AM EST   Nov 11th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Added a couple of snippets to The Blossom. They're not the best, but I hope you'll like them. ;)

7:12AM EST   Nov 5th, 2008 — by ICEE PI
~applauds~ now that we have clarified what *I have said, let's see some of *your thoughts on the matter. I see nothing in your argument that contrasts what I have suggested, just a précis of my discussion, simply added to with 'prettier' language. Are you trying to gloss over your own daunts of this subject with your impressive eloquence? I understand; language has many meanings, and thus you are simply acknowledging that you too, are at a loss as to the proper principles surrounding the term 'genius'. You never stated at the beginning that this discussion was specifically about 'artistic genius' but, yes, I suppose you will jump and in and state that the material being discussed is of an artistic medium. I also stated that my preoccupation was with the disparity between INTELLGENCE and GENIUS, which seems to have slipped your ever sharp mind in your slinging match of one upmanship. I do, however, acknowledge that I have been vague with my reiteration of opinions surrounding my examination of this idea, but I stand by what I have already stated, that passion may be considered the defining feature of genius. I can’t say I don’t like the statement that 'genius is not the prerequisite to a masterpiece' which is something that I understand, but couldn't put into words, until now. No, there is something more to genius than simply being able to construct something beautiful, something that 'raises the bar' for all other potential pieces of the same genre, medium or whatever. I have quiet confidence in the fact that 'genius' as the term is put to art, has a practice set in revolution. Shakespeare is considered a genius of modern literature for his revolution of the stage. Beethoven is considered a genius of modern music for his new and experimental ways of creative score. Picasso will go down in history as perhaps the greatest painter who ever lived, perhaps heralded as a genius of his field. These are only three examples of which an ‘artist’s’ work is revered, applauded, replicated, and attempts of betterment have been made. Revolution, accompanied by popular opinion, seems to be the measurement of genius, if not the standard of such a term. There may be two 'bifurcated' areas of genius that you have detected, artistic and intelligent, but I also feel that they may be symbiotic in their relationship, harmonising with each other, yet hardly encroaching on each other's realm. Can one exist without the other? It remains to be seen. In closing (of this comment anyway), I would like to throw a further element into the mix. We are influenced by our environments. Our experiences shape who we are, and our experiences, or at least elements of which, are replicated, subverted and highlighted through our art. Another nod to passion, but yes, I know what you're going to say, this doesn't have anything to do with the definition of genius, but I beg to differ, for without inspiration, one can not have their masterpiece. You have it wrong, I am not scared of the prospects of genius, I acknowledge fully the talent of these people. I am simply trying to work out a ‘true’ definition of the term and its surrounding concepts. I want to go beyond the definitions outlined in the dictionary.

7:11AM EST   Nov 5th, 2008 — by ICEE PI
OOOOOOOOKkkkkk, I'll stick it in here since the comment thingy is being uncooperative ;)

8:45PM EST   Nov 4th, 2008 — by ICEE PI
you... ~waggles finger~ you...grr...you shoot me down in flames and then bugger off? Nice ;D If my head hadn't been hitting the keyboard every few seconds and my mind had been fresh and clear that discussion of genius would have been a lot more interesting, and I wouldn't have sounded sooooo...high school. I's done making excuses for my lack of philosophy and concepts. It was, to say the least, humbling ;) Give feedback once in awhile, encourage the troops ~waves~

Forgive and Forget. Forgive and Forget. You really are great, and you are talented and gifted at writing. That's one thing I shouldn't forget...or forgive. ;) Still, best wishes. ~Kole

11:43PM EST   Oct 17th, 2008 — by Kole
Ryan, you have to understand that I don't 'get close' to people on this site the way some of them would like me to. Really, the only people who matter to me here are the ones that I met at first, the list that includes Collin, Jace, Nina, Simeon Simon, and, well, you. You are the people who saw the beginnings of my writing on this site. You guys are the ones that encouraged me, inspired me, and showed me that amateur writing is not unprofessional writing. I have to say that One Million Monkeys Typing is the best thing that has happened to me writing-wise. I don't care if you people are my friends. This is just the internet. What I do care about is the appropriate amount of mutual respect that has been the spirit of Million Monkeys for as long as I can remember (83 days, as of now.). Perhaps I was just being sensitive. Anyway, I really appreciate the apology, and I really appreciate your writing, so hopefully you'll get around to it. I have to say that a lot of the writing activity and quality has declined since the days from when I first joined. But, for now, I'll do my best to revive it. Toodeloo, Kole Rohbock

1:53PM EST   Oct 15th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Hi Ryan, Thanks for the response! I'm sorry, by the way, if I misdirected the question to Nina. I'm more than happy to dig myself out of the hole I dug planting my first tree :).

11:44PM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Kole
Cloak and Dagger way? Oh, no! It's got a name, now! Hope you're well. Good to see NIna back, in any case...

12:17AM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Nina Zito
dear ryan, it has been FOREVER since I have been able to be doing any MM work and I am trolling through my tremendous inbox of Monkey Mail. A long time ago you asked a question about comments disappearing (or was it snippets in the snippet list?) either way...yes the system only shows the last 50 of each. Hope you are well and I hope to see you soon. I have heard rumors that you have a cloak and dagger way to access the site and that you hide in shadows. I hope you still enjoy it here when you can. All my best.

1:48AM EST   Oct 10th, 2008 — by James
Sorry. I looked back and it appears that you tried to call out ot me yesterday. This whole fake ryan business is very confusing.

5:30PM EST   Oct 7th, 2008 — by Kole
You are an interesting creature, Ryan. You sign on every once in a while...but I expect that most of the time you stay invisible. Can you snippet while you're invisible? Or do you have to sign on to do that? Just curious. Chao! ~Kole

1:59PM EST   Oct 4th, 2008 — by Kole
You jerk! You know what antisocial means! Whatever, though. Be sure to catch Collin if you can. He's going insane from everyone BUT him communing with you. You are one of his unofficial favorites, you know. He misses you. Stay in Touch! ~Kole

2:26AM EST   Oct 2nd, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
It was great to chat the other night. Again, congrats on your good news! Anyway, if you ever want to talk more about your writing (or anything else) just let me know. I enjoyed getting to know you a bit better! :)

11:41PM EST   Sep 27th, 2008 — by Kole
Ryan, I'd like to start off with that I miss you. You are my favorite monkey of all time. We just had a discussion about 'These Lines'. We came to the conclusion that it was a retrospect of your own writing, and every stanza, to me, was significant. Ryan, you are a Forrester figure to me, like in that movie 'Finding Forrester'. You may think 'Great, I have a fourteen year-old admirer. I don't think I'll come to Million Monkeys ever again.' but I wouldn't care. You've made an impression on me, and forever in my mind I will read 'These Lines' by Ryan Riverside. I will think of my own writing. '...AND THEY SHAPED A HEART...' The love of writing. 'These Lines'

Ryan, I'm glad to see that you are finding time (seemingly) to come back to Million Monkeys. Who knows? The last time I saw you I didn't have much time at all. I look forward to it! Be sure to try and catch Collin, too!

7:16PM EST   Sep 18th, 2008 — by Kura Whut
OH! Wait! I guess I have to ask you if I can write a short poem.(same thing as a Nonnet, right?) So, yea. Get back to me if you can!

7:13PM EST   Sep 18th, 2008 — by Kura Whut
Cool Beans! Well, Thanks for the help, Ryan! I'll think I'll try it out! have fun typing! --Kihra

So, I f I was going to write a Nonnet, I would say so and then write it, right? Just so everyone's clear?

9:18PM EST   Sep 15th, 2008 — by Kura Whut
Hey fellow monkey! i had a question about your Haiku, Limericks, and Lore! Oh My! story. Does the poem I write have to have something to do with the poem written before it? Or can it be totally random? Please write me back on my profile! Thanks!

11:14PM EST   Sep 4th, 2008 — by Kole
You monkey! You came back, and now I feel like an idiot sending you all those mails calling YOU an idiot! Nevertheless, thanks for coming back. I was worried that you all went away, You, Simian Simon...Just as naively as any kid longing for his parents at work to come home. Anyway, it's good to see you around again, and I hope I'm not bugging you like a pesky little brother. See ya around! ~Kole

11:24AM EST   Sep 1st, 2008 — by Kole
Well, the days are adding up. Ryan, magician extraordinaire, one of the greats of Million Monkeys all-time, has disappeared, probably forever. You sicko! You abandoned us! Well, whatever you do, just...Ah what the heck. You are the best. We'll miss you here! Unless you're on vacation. I would feel like an idiot if that was the case. Frick, it's only been four days. Anyway, I hope you didn't leave like Simian Simon, Aria Broeka, DillyDallyGhost, and the rest of the long lost greats. See you around! )I hope).

Ryan. If I didn't know better I'd think you were tired of this site. That would certainly be too bad. ... Hhh...

Congrats on your six hundred and sixty sixth snippet. :)

8:34AM EST   Aug 25th, 2008 — by Kate
My bad, sorry Ryan. I remembered that like 20 minutes after I shut down the computer, but I couldn't get back on until today. Sorry, I won't do that from now on. :)

2:08AM EST   Aug 25th, 2008 — by Shane
my fault for not reading the rule's. I'll keep adding to other people's snippets from now on.

It is really good to have you back online. Also love the new tree series! We have some ideas about other uses for seed percentage, hopefully we can get them in the work queue after our two new features launch...be well.

4:53PM EST   Aug 21st, 2008 — by Shane
hey, this is Shane. Sorry that I was messing around in your poetry place. I got caught up in the whole 'stupidpeopleitis' snippet that was before me and I guess I went too far.

Oh, good heavens no. I didn't mean I was actually wondering if I was to his level, it's just that it's a habit I've acquired to say 'I'm not sure if...'. It's a way of achieving mutual status. No offense taken! I didn't mean to suggest that I was wondering whether or not I did! ~Kole On the other hand, Thanks for responding.

It inspired me to write, but I'm not sure I write to his standards. :) Anyway, thanks. I was just curious.

2:52PM EST   Aug 21st, 2008 — by Kole
Ryan, Have you ever seen Finding Forrester? For some reason the conversation about the poem sorta reminded me of that movie, making me curious. Sorry to disturb your silence. :) ~Kole

Knowledge, thinking, intelligence, information...Something to do with the mind...It might be conciousness...Grrrr...Everything I've come up with doesn't make sense exactly. I have to say it's a well written poem. I'm not much for symbolism anyway...I've asked people what they thought they were...But they hadn't even a clue. Ah well...I tried my best. Let me tell you, this is a very vivid poem, I just don't understand it. That's the best I've come up with

10:45AM EST   Aug 20th, 2008 — by Kole
Ryan, it's official. <:( I can't figure out what 'Those Lines' Are. I read it once everyday since you told me about it, and I was up to the challenge of figuring it out. But I didn't. Please tell me what they are! Please! P.S. I'm not begging. I'm just asking. ;) ~Kole

Ello. I haven't been on for months. The big computer crash of '08 (or at least, the big computer crash at my house). So, how art thou?

1:32AM EST   Aug 16th, 2008 — by Megan Baptista
Uh...thanks! I'm glad to be here, and trying to recruit coworkers and other talented folks. No one I know wants to be a monkey...yet. :0)

Hey Ryan! I love 'Leif' and 'Haiku, Lymericks, and Lore! oh my!'. I've been having a lot of fun writing snippets on those. Keep up the good work!

You mean Fred Radical?
No.
I was actually thinking of your avatar.
Then, of fireworks.
Then of Mariama's avatar. Then, I just figured, what the heck, I'll ask a few people if their avatars are them. And lo and behold, some o' 'em are...ish.
~~Collin

Dear sir,
How much does your avatar look like you?
Sincerely,
Collin

7:53AM EST   Aug 7th, 2008 — by Fred Radical
The avatar is not me! I borrowed it from a news article about an annual meeting of facial hair afficionados. I just think it is amazing that someone could put that much effort into their beard...

Thanks for your note - good to see you active again. I've had to take a bit of a break - work crunch - but should be around more soon.

Thank you, Ryan! I love the idea of The Tree - true fantasy at its best. :)

Thanks for the compliment on my snippet. It brightened my day.

9:41PM EST   Aug 5th, 2008 — by Birdscallin' Mudplop-Schwyn
Ryan, thanks for all the additions to my tree. I'll see to it that the favor is returned.

5:11PM EST   Aug 4th, 2008 — by Molly Lankford
Never think you should have written something of less quality. It's amazing and it should be. ^_^

4:28PM EST   Aug 4th, 2008 — by Molly Lankford
I have no idea why they don't though, because it's amazing!

I officially love Nemesis!

Hei Ryan. I really appreciate your monkey mail to Nina. You're not alone when it comes to Pj-is-sexy. Thanks a whole ton.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Mr. Riversong. Like Colin, I'd have to say I'm impressed with the sheer amount of your snippets and trees... :)

Thanks for the advice Ryan, you know how it is on a new site, have to learn the ins and outs. I really like your seed and look forward to watching the process and participating!

1:31PM EST   Jul 31st, 2008 — by Mariama Abdulai
Hi Ryan, Congratulations on the new story! :) And 40% already, yay! :)

3:37PM EST   Jul 30th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Ryan, thanks so much for the kind note. HLL was the first tree I really warmed up to on this site; stumbling upon some of your back-and-forth poetry with other monkeys reminded me how freeing and fun writing can (should) be. For that reason, most of my poetry there has been more about stress relief and goofiness than any serious, artistic effort... so I'm *particularly* glad to learn that you weren't annoyed to see how much I added to that tree. Glad you're back....! :)

12:21PM EST   Jul 30th, 2008 — by Mariama Abdulai
How stupid! What is written down there is supposed to be me. I used my brother's account; he's a monkey too(Chikitata monkey). I guess he forgot to log out so i just continued without looking at the name. Ya, like i said, I'll add to it when i have a little more time. Right now, I'm just preparing for school. Have a great day! :)

12:14PM EST   Jul 30th, 2008 — by chikitata Monkey
Pardon me, Ryan. I wanted to finish my story (at least the first part of it) before i leave for school. I will add though; i said i will, so i will certainly do it. Have a good day! :)

I saw other people writing just haiku so i thought that you don't have to write renga.

Thank you, Ryan. It's wonderful to hear you appreciate my un-American charm and values. It would have made me red with joy, but unfortunately, I'm not the right colour. :D Missed you too. :) I hope you have more of your great writing to share. Let the writing begin! :)

12:00PM EST   Jul 23rd, 2008 — by Mariama Abdulai
Let's just say, Mariama survived. :) I'm good, it's good to have you back though. :D

Welcome back, Ryan. :)

just checking in to say hello. I am continually impressed by your high average snippet rank. i know your life has changed a bit this summer and it is most-likely difficult for you to visit us—but I want to let you know that your legacy on the site is incredibly appreciated. Have you seen your Haiku tree? It is intensely popular. I was actually a big fan of your Nemesis tree. But then again I pretty much loop the Firefly series in the background while I work, and future-past space-westerns make me very happy.

you gonna plant us a tree you have a seed

12:26AM EST   Jun 20th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
I left a couple of comments on your ATWT sonnets. The earlier ones, mostly. I actually had more questions than comments I think, such as: are they meant to be read sequentially? Anywho. I hope you'll share some more of your work this summer. Best wishes.

Ello, Ryan! I have come back from the Underworld to write more! You see, I'd been kidnapped by UPS guys and sent to their spaceship and murdered. Then I spent 1 1/2 months with Hades and then I broke free just to type with you. Or...maybe my computer has been freaking out. But it's better now. TTYL, Kanti.

Ryan, were you online when we had our site glitch? Apologies if you were. We were making updates and the connection went down. A small thing that made a big mess for a moment. Also thought you might think this is neat: http://dir.yahoo.com check the bottom of the page. Best to you, Nina

I was wondering if I could possibly post a poem I wrote a few days ago. It's fairly short and it's about the life of a percusionist. hence the name' The Life of a Percusionist' let me know...oh and telling someone like it is and speaking your mind can be the same thing but can also be very different.

10:37PM EST   Jun 14th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
I added nonnets, in honor of your previous sonnets. Erase if you'd like! Best wishes :)

11:29PM EST   Jun 12th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
What are your thoughts about the third poem variety in HLLOM now? I'm a fan of weird archaic things like triolets myself, but could also get into couplets or free verse or something else less uncommon... anyway, no matter what, I look forward to seeing what ends up happening in that tree next. :)
