monkey writer bio
As you might have guessed, I am one of the creators of this site. It is my voice you hear bumbling through the instructional video; like the site itself we rushed that to print. I adore this idea, and was really eager to finish so that I could spend some time expressing myself creatively. We have much to clean up, but the real world will keep us at a slow pace for awhile. Anyway, it was ready enough to begin something and so...

I sat down to write and found that it was a skill I hadn't accessed in a long time, and even then I am not sure I was that brilliant. I am hoping that people can think of it as a kind of writing sketchbook. A place to generate ideas, and hopefully be pushed in different directions.

The first thing I wrote Ilya thought was awful, and complained that it was so dense he had no idea what it was about. I enjoy his honesty in our relationship, but I must say that was a tad crushing. My favorite authors are dense, meticulous writers; but they are also craftsmen that love and manipulate text. And so, perhaps (as my grandmother used to say) 'my eyes were too big for my stomach'—and my desire outpaced my ability. We posted it anyway as story number one: 'Strange Attractors'.

You may also notice Monkey #3. She is our daughter Sencha, (you will also see her cropped arm in this photograph Ilya uploaded of me). She takes up most of my time and creative juices. So if you don't think I write well, I am going to take this opportunity to blame her. It's a handicap I am very happy with.

I am hoping that all of you readers will also become writers and join us in this brain-stretching exercise. There are no right answers. Just crack your knuckles and begin.

Hi hi, just a suggestion, what do you think about integrating a 'To The Grove' link, up where 'What's New' etc sit? It would make navigating that little bit easier. Love this site, thanks for creating it :) ~waves~

Hey Nina, I've been on a sort of hiatus from 1000000monkeys for a while now, but now I am back and here to stay. I was a beta monkey when I left, but now, even though I'm online, it says I'm extinct. Could you explain? Thanks!

4:53PM EST   Mar 13th, 2010 — by Nathan Lachow
Nina, I just wanted to say that this is my all-time favorite website. You and Ilya are incredible!! (Sencha too...)

Great site, Nina. Keep your chin up. This site has a great concept. I've linked to it on my blog, http://fourdamnwords.blogspot.com/ Best wishes!

3:52PM EST   Nov 2nd, 2009 — by Sonny Guzman
Hello! I'm Sonny, and I would like to THANK YOU for creating such a wonderful site! The snippets have been great exercise for me, and the trees (genres of stories) are so different that I'm having an excellent time jumping from limb-to-limb and experiencing different types styles.

11:18PM EST   Oct 20th, 2009 — by Jayne ßläck
Hey Nina, just a quick question: I used to be a beta money, then I was off the site for a while and became extinct. Now I'm back and here to stay, what happens to my ranking now? Thanks!

2:18PM EST   Sep 14th, 2009 — by Owen can see you
there was an unseeded story and there were monkeys' names on it. what does that mean

6:15PM EST   Sep 11th, 2009 — by Ken Bendo
I apologize, you seem like you have a VERY busy life. And this is more important than my other comment here. You can just ignore that one. ANYWAYS, a random person keeps rating my snippets 1 and leaving no comment. It bothers me since now I look like a terrible writer. So I think that the snippet author should be able to view who rated their own snippets and what they rated them. Thankums.

5:30PM EST   Sep 10th, 2009 — by Owen can see you
I think that there should be a chat box that stays at the bottom of the screen no matter where you are on the site

5:57PM EST   Sep 9th, 2009 — by Owen can see you
Hello i have ten snippets and i still don't have 1 or 2%. Chris said that wheni had six but i now have ten. what should i do

9:36PM EST   Sep 3rd, 2009 — by Chris Sadler
Hey, Nina. Hi. Saw that you were on earlier but I missed you by an hour. Poop. Anyway, I hope all is well with family and life. Cheers!

6:32PM EST   Aug 27th, 2009 — by Ken Bendo
First of all, I think you've done a great job with this site and I'm sorry to bother you about a minor glitch. Second, for some reason I have two friends who are the same Isabelle. I tried deleting them but that got rid of both, and I added her again once and two doggies came up! Ohnoes. Is there anything I can do, or any reason fixing this is necessary!?

1:36PM EST   Aug 11th, 2009 — by Kole
Okay, I figured it out. When you're really, really close to 100% on a tree, it shows it as you having 100% when really, you don't. If someone has the same problem, suggest that they attempt just 1% more and see if that helps. Thanks anyway! ~Kole

9:56PM EST   Aug 10th, 2009 — by Kole
I probably ought to tell you why. For some reason, when I click the 'plant your tree' link it takes me to the story index, not the spot where I can write and publish. So...I don't know how you can fix that, but I have faith! Perhaps it's the computer I'm at. Anyway, please look into it. Thank you, Kole

6:48PM EST   Aug 10th, 2009 — by Kole
For some reason, I can't plant my tree. Help?

4:10PM EST   Aug 6th, 2009 — by Jess Xie
Hi Nina, sorry to bother you again. If it is possible, could you prune snippet #16752 (Jess Xavier's Incredible Play)? I accidentally clicked graft twice...thanks!

4:06PM EST   Aug 6th, 2009 — by Jess Xie
Hi Nina, what is the difference between public and private groves? I am pretty sure this isn't the first time you've answered this question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Thanks!

11:44PM EST   Aug 2nd, 2009 — by Sadie Wolfe
hi, i'm rather confused could you post instructions?/email me on how this site functions? i'd like to share, but i do not know how (yet!) thank you very much. S.M.Wolfe

3:14PM EST   Jul 20th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Though I'm sure you may never get to my comment (seeing as how busy you are) I'd like to voice my suggestion anyhow. I've noticed the inumerable amount of 'pole tree' stories and the limited amount of 'saw timber' ones. So I was just thinking that maybe there should be some sort of middle to them? Another tree ranking, if you will. Don't go changing anything on my account though, I'm just another monkey on this wonderful site. Though I think you should start considering it since the 'about' page stated that the tree rankings were never meant to be permanent. Thanks for listening.

I wasn't sure what Dominique was talking about, so I directed her to you guys. It didn't seem like a do-able plan, but I didn't feel right just saying, 'NO.' So, thank you for your Monkey Mail. Hope all is well with you and your family!

7:54AM EST   Mar 6th, 2009 — by Angie Beth
Hi, I was just wondering if there is something wrong with the ratings? Over the past few days, I wrote a couple of snippets on different trees but they havn't been rated yet nor are there any offshoots. Is there some rule I'm not following? is that why I'm not getting rated? Or are those trees dead? Confused..

3:34AM EST   Feb 18th, 2009 — by Angie Beth
just wanted to you know that this site is brilliant! i'm really enjoying thinking and writing creatively! i always had an inclination to write but not ready to write a book..now i have a platform i can just let my imagination run wild!..thank you!

Hello, Nina. I thought I'd give you the heads up- I recieved a strange message several times when trying to access the chat page. It was a system error where the DBI connect failed. It also had several code lines listed as the context and went into the code stack. I've saved it in case you'd like to look at it. I just wasn't sure if Ilya was working again or not.

7:39PM EST   Jan 16th, 2009 — by Daniel Betekhtin
I should report that my avatar will not change fully. My new avatar will only show on my snippets. My old one shows on my homepage and chat. I don't know if this has happened before, but I thought I might as well report in. Thank You! Daniel

I haven't really started on this site yet but i'm already enjoying it. Thanks to you and the other makers of this site. Hopefully i'll be able to make any snippets at all. I'm horrible at writing. But like you said about yourself, My desire far outpaces my ability. sincerely a new monkey, Raymond M. Nazimek

Happy new year! (Obligatory greeting to introduce another idea, haha.) Again, coming up with some way to improve the site... would it be possible to have email alerts when one gets monkeymail? Thanks for even bothering to read this. ~> Justin

Hi, Nina. Same to you and your family! My, what a good memory you have! Yes, I broke my leg in a game two days before Christmas last year and had a couple of months to think about how dumb that was...

Hey just wanted to say this is a really cool idea. I have no idea how i stumbled upon it but i tried it for the first time the other day and had so much fun with it. Again, really cool idea! Keep up the good work!

Nevermind, I figured it out.

12:51PM EST   Dec 14th, 2008 — by Jayne ßläck
Hey Nina, I have a question. How do you pick the books on the side of your profile, or do we now have a say? It just seems like most people have the 'Read these books to get inspired' that they would almost have to have picked. Please answer soon, I must know!

5:15PM EST   Dec 13th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Hi Nina. Quick question: I'm at 100% of a seed, but for the last two days it hasn't been letting me plant. At first it would take me to the home page when I finished and hit 'graft,' but now it's just clearing out the planting page. Thanks!

1:08AM EST   Dec 7th, 2008 — by Carleton Thayer
Hello again, Nina. I'd like to bounce an idea off of you, if I may. Do you think it would be possible to incorporate some type of filter so as to block guest monkeys from the chatroom? In my short time here (I still consider myself a new monkey) I have witnessed more occasions than I care to of guests coming into the chatroom, giving off insulting remarks to existing members, and then leaving. Few ever join, and as I ran a check through the member lists, a majority of those who do write perhaps a half-dozen snippets, if any, and never return. I love this site, and wish that all our monkeys be treated with respect. I find this public torment to be shameful acts that we should not have to endure.

6:29PM EST   Nov 26th, 2008 — by Peter Doyle
Nina, quick question. What exactly do the small white numbers in parentheses that are on the main page mean? For example, (+5). Thanks in advance!

8:37PM EST   Nov 19th, 2008 — by Mariama Abdulai
Hi Nina. Long time no talk. :D

6:09AM EST   Nov 18th, 2008 — by Simian Simon
Hi Nina. I was wondering if you guys had thought about methods to allow monkeys to stimulate interest in their own trees. I was just thinking that it would be great if the planter of a private tree had the ability to 'pay' for snippets with their own seed percentages. I see it working as follows: the planter dedicates a certain percent of a seed (that they have already earned from writing snippets) toward their private tree, and lists each snippet as having a certain value (say 30% and 0.5% respectively). Each person to add a snippet to that tree can potentially earn the second percentage, until the planters 'reservoir' is drained (if ever). The planter then reviews the snippets and either prunes them or accepts them. The writer only earns the seed% if the snippet is accepted. To be fair to all, there should be a 'expiry' date, say 14 days, after which the snippet is automatically accepted. The beauty of this idea is three-fold: (1) it allows monkeys to stimulate interest in their own tree (2) it stimulates writing in all trees so that owners of private trees have enough seed% to 'pay' for snippets (3) it gives very proliferative writers something more to do with their seed% If it was to be implemented, I would also suggest a grace period where monkeys who have already planted trees can convert them to private.

hey, every once in a while whenever I try to graph something it won't let me.~Ryan

5:41PM EST   Nov 8th, 2008 — by Simian Simon
Just wondering if there was any further info on the disappearing seed% ? The sawmill seems to be gone, but I'm still losing % --> Since my last login I've lost the remaining 1.5% (at least, don't know if I've gone negative again). Really curious what's happening.

7:25PM EST   Nov 6th, 2008 — by Jeanne McLymond
Hi Nina :) I finally had a few free minutes to log in and look around. I've missed everyone! This working for a living is for the bird... To answer your question - I've had no isses grafting. Just that one time when I was trying to plant the tree itself. Everything else has been great. :)

9:24PM EST   Nov 4th, 2008 — by Birdscallin' Mudplop-Schwyn
Old Man Riverside thinks that when he posted his 666th snippet, the site crashed. Sorry, that's all I got. ~Collin

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina!!!!!! Where'd the sawmill go?

10:03PM EST   Oct 26th, 2008 — by Justin
Hey, Nina, you might remember me, which is bad thing. Heh. Anyways, I was just wondering how viable a 'snippet map' would be for the trees. It would be chart that shows every snippet and how many there actually are, like a huge tree. Just a thought.

5:09PM EST   Oct 25th, 2008 — by Simian Simon
Just had an idea(s) relating to NaNoWriMo (national novel writing month--write 50,000 words in 30 days for november--www.nanowrimo.org). It might be cool to try and have a MMT version. It could either work as (1) counting all words added in all snippets during the month or (2) there could be a new tree planted (a NaNoWriMo tree) with appropriate on site discussion to stimulate interest, then everyone is encouraged to add to that tree until we reach the 50,000 words mark (it could even be 'verified' if MMT opened a NaNoWriMo account). Although NaNoWriMo is generally a solo event, it might be interesting to try it this way--and you might be able to drum up some kind of collaboration or at least advertising with The Office of Letters and Light (the non-profit org that runs NaNoWriMo). Just a thought.

5:00PM EST   Oct 25th, 2008 — by Simian Simon
Just back for a stop and saw the sawmill feature, looks interesting and could potentially stimulate writing on some less active branches. On a perhaps related question, somewhere in the last 20 days since I logged on I lost about 30% of a seed (was at 32% now at 1.5%)? Has there been another adjustment re: planting? did I have an inordinate number of snippets fall in the sawmill? Just curious what happened. Oh, and...wow, the site is really taking off--over 1200! grats

3:07PM EST   Oct 25th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Thanks for doing whatever it took to get the site up and running again. :)

10:47PM EST   Oct 22nd, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Hey Nina! Just curious -- I'm guessing it would generate some income for monkeys to, say, buy books via the panel on the right... but is it also helpful simply to click on those links from time to time, even if nothing's purchased...? (Was trying to think up ways to be helpful.) Best wishes keeping healthy as things get chilly. :)

4:50PM EST   Oct 22nd, 2008 — by Shane
Nah. My graftins is working fine now, but thats the second time it's happened, so I dont know if it'll strike again or not. *superstitious shudder* Anyway, thanks for your time!

12:21PM EST   Oct 20th, 2008 — by Lucy Australopithecus
My grafting problem was fixed, thanks! I just sort of go through writing cycles, and this website (however awesome) comes and goes in my fancy. So I'll probably be back round in a bit. Thank you for you concern!

4:44PM EST   Oct 16th, 2008 — by Carleton Thayer
Hi Nina~ I hate do complain the first time I meet you, but I'm having a problem with the mail feature. Whenever I click 'Add Comment' my screen refreshes, but the mail is still in the text box. If I keep trying to refresh or click 'add comment' it will post the mail multiple times in the monkey's mailbox. It's happened on both Elizabeth Gilroy's page and Chris's page if you want to see an example. Thanks a lot. ~Carleton

11:15PM EST   Oct 15th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Thank you very much for the response! Now that I know what's going on, it is rather a non-issue. I am happy to wait patiently until I hit the benchmark where the points start showing up again. Besides, I'm having too much fun with my first tree to devote the time and energy to a new one!

11:30AM EST   Oct 15th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Hi Nina. I have not received any percentage points for a couple days, even when I or another Monkey grafts directly onto one of my buds. I'm wondering what's going on :). Thanks!

3:41PM EST   Oct 13th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Not to worry about the absence! Just glad to have you back. Incidentally, I love how you've set up the sawmill, looks great, should be interesting.

12:18AM EST   Oct 12th, 2008 — by Birdscallin' Mudplop-Schwyn
Thanks for writing, Nina. Two things about the sawmill; 1) Exactly what are the grounds for being...sawed, or snipped or whatnot? 2) What significance do the numbers (45H, 13H, etc) have? Thanks, Collin

11:47PM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Kole
Whoa! Things just got interesting with that new sawmill put into place. Does this affect trees as a whole? Such a wonderful idea, though! All of a sudden, Million Monkeys has become...I dunno...twice as awesome! ~Ozz

11:39PM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Kole
It's wonderful to see you back! I was tired of trying to tell the new monkeys about how great you and Ilya are. Anyway, the site always seem to move a bit faster and productively when you're around, and for that I'd have to say 'Thank you.' With that said, Thank You for the whole site. I think that this site is the best thing that has happened to my writing, seeing as I get feedback from people I barely know...which is what really counts. Thank you. ~Ozz

10:50PM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Thanks for the note, Nina! I'll try posting only half of it and see what happens...

10:49PM EST   Oct 11th, 2008 — by Mikoto Yokoshima
Thank you Nina-san, but really, you don't have to thank me. You guys put together the site... that's thanks enough. XD

6:07PM EST   Oct 1st, 2008 — by Kole
Nina, I'm having a problem. Whenever I comment, my avatar is different. It's been happening ever since I tried to change it. It doesn't change for chat or my profile, but when I pop up in a chat bubble or I comment on someone's snippet, It will come up as the avatar I tried to change it to. Is this normal? I don't mind, really, but hopefully when you get back you can address this issue. It's not a serious issue, so take your time. Thanks! ~Kole

12:45AM EST   Sep 7th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Hi Nina! Just an FYI about an error message. Every time I try to add to Duke's original Lan-o-Lunch snippet, I get an error about Branch 8640. No matter what I do, my graft won't post to that branch. Hope you're all doing well! :)

9:37PM EST   Sep 5th, 2008 — by Birdscallin' Mudplop-Schwyn
Hey, Nina, I was just wondering something. So when I go to a snippet, my computer automatically clicks the 'Read Next' for me, and yet when I've seen friends' accounts, it doesn't happen. So I was looking thru the source code and I found this: 'if user is a regular, show branch options'. Just wondering whether that has something to do with it. (Don't worry; I really like that feature!)
Thanks, Collin

hi nina, I have a bit of a problem, and its probably impossible to solve, but just in case, I wanted to ask. So, my sister and I both use this site, and she accidentally posted a snippet under my name, so I was just wondering if their was any way it was possible to reassign a snippet's author. Just in case you can, it's the snippet called 'murder?' on the tree Mythtery, and it comes right after 'Asclepius arrives and discovers a pomegranate seed' currently it says its by Olivia Thistle #113, but its actually by Anabelle Thistle # 1056. I know you might not actually be able to do this, but, thanks, anyway. Sincerely, olivia Thistle &Anabelle Thistle

ok, i dont want to sound repetetive, but im having my grafting problem again. The same one as last time - have you guys figured that out yet? It's okay if you haven't, i can wait like a patient little monkey, but this problem is starrting bug me.

Me again...I hate to be a Moaning Monkey, but I haven't been able to add any snippets since that one went wonky (thanks for fixing it, guys, btw). I am able to get to the Graft page, but when I hit the 'graft' button I get an internet explorer error. Whenever you can get around to checking this out for me would be great. Thanks again! (You guys rock for creating this awesome site and doing all this work for us!) -Lucy

12:27PM EST   Aug 27th, 2008 — by Duke Lemoyne
Hi, Nina. I'm getting ready to plant a seed and I have a question about word counts. If I choose 200 or 300 words, is it necessary for the writer to meet that word count? Because I don't want to pressure people so they don't write, I just want to give them flexibility. My idea is to create a 'musical,' where one snippet is dialogue and action and the next snippet is the 'song,' which should be dialogue or exposition in verse form. It should move the story forward, at any rate. I'd be grateful for any comments or suggestions. If you don't know by now, I love this site. Thanks for starting it, and thanks to Paste for telling me about it.

4:05AM EST   Aug 27th, 2008 — by Shane
me and FullMoonBlue were recently conatacted, in the chatroom, by a mysterious guest monkey (#6064). He claimed to help make the site, but (apparently) did not join it. I found this strange and decided to ask you. Oh and by the way, if you ask Blue - she knows him as 'Bill-Bot' (thats what we decided to call him.) So my question is: does such a monkey exist or did you finnaly install that artificial intelligence I asked you about?

1:15AM EST   Aug 27th, 2008 — by Shane

ok, well, i accidentally created a duplicate snippet in a public grove. can you delete it? if you can then heres the snippet: http://www.1000000monkeys.com/snippet.html?branch=8295

Sorry to bother, but I went to graft a snippet and it ended up attached to a random story. This could very well be user error, though. Just thought I should let some of you brilliant site-building/managing people know. Thanks!

i have a suggestion for your site. I think you should give the monkeys a 'Comments' page where they can view all the comments they have recieved...or atleast the 'Latest Ten' or Five or something. Please get back to me on this. P.S. Hope your kids start feeling better:)

I second Collin's remarks. This site is off the hook! I also like Delton's word count idea. Good job, guys!

I have a question about pruning. If your snippet gets pruned, does your seed percentage go down?

Nina, Thanks for taking my suggestion about word count on the snippet page into consideration. I'll be looking forward to trying out whatever the new large projects are that you guys have coming. Keep up the great work!

You guys were worried I'd get bored? With such a wonderful site to keep me occupied? Nonsense! Is that why you guys added cool features like 'Live Chat' and 'Monkey Mail,' to give me ways to stay busy? I appreciate it (snicker). I habitually log on every day to read the new entries (and add some of my own, should the muse strike), but lately that task has been taking about an hour or so! And then, of course, I gotta make comments... If we ever do reach 1,000,000 Monkeys I'm gonna have to quit my job just to keep pace! Best wishes!

hei! um...I achieved 22% and 'beta' status in my first 3 days here. Kole thought it might be a record, so im gonna ask you? Well, is it?

I fixed my problem, i had to much space in between my pieces of text.

Wow. Is it just me, or is the site exploding? When I began four months ago, Ryan's Haiku, Limericks and Lore tree was the newest one, you were having the Earth Day contest, and there were 400 fewer monkeys. Now, there are 36 trees! Six monkeys have 100%, including two who have never planted a tree before! And the site isn't even a year and a half old! I have just one thing to say:
Thanks.

I just saw your message from four weeks ago. My goodness I've been busy. The phone is treating me well. I especially like being able to read the NY Times whenever I'm waiting in line somewhere. And I'm sure good ole Stevie would appreciate a fruit basket -- I'm only now getting the pun :) -- he really is Apple and I don't know what that company would do without him. I see you guys are about to hit 1,000 members, so congratulations. I don't know if I told you, but I'm actually writing a script for a western now, so that's taking up my time when I'm not filming. I'm really excited about it though. It'll be a really quiet, slow western, however; more of a European style if you want to call it that. Anyway, I hope you guys are doing well. Congrats again on your grow numbers! - Tom

Aww Nina, :( Thanks so much for everything. Especially for just being there. :) I will tell you about my school when I get there (Going on the sixteenth; tomorrow). It's really wonderful knowing you and all that, you are a pretty nice person. :) I will certainly visit from time to time, since I'm officially a monkey! :D I wish you nothing but the best times with Ilya, Sencha and Hudson. :)

Hi Nina :) It's a Gateway laptop - Windows XP OS (Media Ceter Edition V2002, SP2) - IE7. The one thing that I didn't think to try was clearing my cache... I do it religiously at work because we are on Oracle and we sometimes run into caching issues with our forms... But never thought to try it here. If there's anything else you need, just let me know. :)

Nina - A million thanks to you and Ilya for helping me out with this... When I get home tonite I'll pull all the specifics off my laptop - OS and all that. :)

hey nina! I am new to million monkeys, and I have a couple of questions: 1) How does the caste system work? 2) How do you plant a tree?

9:28PM EST   Aug 12th, 2008 — by Jeanne McLymond
Hi Nina :) I'm not sure if you are still lurking about, but the first time I planted, I did copy and paste from Word. The last two or three times I tried, I typed it in from a printed copy - the last time I tried staying below the max character count to see if it would help... I filled in all the fields. When I hit graft, it appeared to be loading, but then returned the form completely blank. If there are other specific details that will help you and Ilya, just let me know. :)

Nina - help?? I'm having trouble planting... I fill the form in and submit the tree, but it returns a blank form to me and no newly planted tree. :( I'm a very sad monkey... Fullmoonblue had similar problems when she planted and suggusted not hitting the word count exactly. So I reduced my word count and still ended up with the same result. Any helpful suggestions? Thanks!!

Wait--you have an instructional video?

Yay! 'Gamma' monkeys! Thanks oodles! Anyway, I was just wondering if you could update the FAQs. Some of them seem a couple months old, as new features have since been implemnted. Thankee, Collin.

10:42PM EST   Aug 7th, 2008 — by Birdscallin' Mudplop-Schwyn
Heya there. I'm just dropping by a note to propose a new monkey caste: 'GAMMA'! What would it be used for? The answer, of course, is monkeys who have not written any snippets. I think that such a new caste would help monkeys sort thru the 'monkeys' page. I also propose not making 'extict' be the arbitrary caste for a monkey. I think that whether a monkey was ambassador (although Chris would never let it happen), alpha, beta, omega or gamma (please add!) should be included just like a dormant monkey's caste is still noted in 'caste'. That way, people will know what caste long-dead monkeys achieved at their peaks.
Thanks for considering my $0.02. -Collin
