monkey writer bio
I'm back after a long sequester which include me falling in love with painting, graduating, getting promoted, and enjoying life. I've got some time now, and I can't promise to be back all the time. But I want to bring up Shells and Barrels again. I just need to read it to get me up to speed. Mario, you scamp, what have you been up to?

Gazing in Twilight

As the moon sets over your lovely eyes, they close for tonight
And even though your features shadowed, you still are a sight.
You features delicate, your breathing slow,
The most relaxed angel that I've ever known
And now you're here with in my arms, out of harm's way.
When twilight comes and darkness with, peace settles over us.
Gone now are the thoughts we had pertaining to our lust.
The only thing there is sense of our love
While we listen to quiet prayers of angels above
We lay and quietly doze, out of the snow's cold.
I lay and stare at you beautiful face; I start to drift myself
And I dream a dream I often do where I am devoid of wealth.
But since I have you, I don't care
I think of only where WE go from there
The two that are one, the moon and the sun in one sky.

The Ending is Always Better than the Midway.

Flashing lights caress already dulled corneas
And you lay in my quivering arms
The rides have all squealed to shuddering deaths
And the sugary fluff sitting deep in my bowels
Is doing me no possible end of harm.

The workers shuffle around our steps
Avoiding all forms of eye contact and touch
While you look up at me, eyes glazed with a full day
Of scraping metal, children, and dirt paths
Of candy, slick popcorn, and other such.

The exit comes quickly, more than night had seemed
While keys fished out of my pocket cease their digging
The dirt clouds formed by my dragging soles
Fade up into the damp air
As we linger our thoughts on an optimistic beginning.

Where was the deep fried batter coated paper plates
And the friends that said they be there?
The ending is always nicer than the midway,
Especially when the clowns are present
A better time could be had at the fair.

Sorry, I shouldn't e-mail people I don't actually know. Who knows, you still might be a stalker. My mom would flip if she thought I was e-mailing a 26 year old guy, sorry pal... On another note, Narwhales DO exist! Funny huh?

Ah, Mike, buddy, pal... Yeah, I need your input on something, alright? I have another idea for a seed/tree and I think I might be getting somewhere... If I'm headin' towards a dead end then just tell me now! So... are you up to the challenge?

Sounds good to me! Don't add your snippets all at once though, I'll never be able to go to sleep knowing theres still more reading to be done! And watch out, I'm about done with my story on Shells and Barrels and I'm going to plant a new tree soon. Look out for it!

Did you notice that Shells & Barrels has 30 trunks in the grove!!! That's awesome and a tribute to your set up. ~kat

7:52PM EST   Jul 9th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Ah, I see you like 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' eh? I read it once, but that is way beyond my reading level. I could tell it was a really great book though. Someday, when I'm older, I shall read it again. What did you think of the book?

7:27PM EST   Jul 7th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
I'm back! Hows that site? Did it collapse while I was gone? Haha, but seriously I'm back in business!

6:13PM EST   Jun 19th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
I thought so, I hope you like creepy stories then because this one is sure to give you the creeps!

3:13PM EST   Jun 19th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
By the way, I've been thinking of the tree I'm going to plant. I don't want to give much away, but I think it's going to be along the lines of 'The Phantom Sea'. Too spooky? Or really interesting?

12:27PM EST   Jun 19th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Well usually I'll just write and see where that takes me, but after your inspiration I've gotten a few main things mapped out. Its just that I haven't written them down or anything because my story goes where it wants to. I never intended Link and Co to enter that field ya know, but seeing as it would've taken them three days on foot... I had to be realistic! See I find problems in my own story and add on more snippets to fix them which in turn leads to...well, more! You kinda get my gist here?

2:43PM EST   Jun 18th, 2009 — by Dominique Marogani
Thank you for your reply... even though you was way off on my intent.

12:18PM EST   Jun 18th, 2009 — by Dominique Marogani
Would you be willing to sell your 1000000monkeys account. The thing is i'm in need of a seed, but kind of pressed for time. Please give it some thought. I will be in a position to purchase next thursday (the 25th) when I get paid. I hope to hear back from you.

2:45PM EST   Jun 17th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Wow! Thanks a ton! No thank you more then that! I just figured out my story! Mainly I've been going along with it only keeping in mind the very near future, but now I've figured it out! Since you kept bringing back the classics I decided maybe to introduce some of that retro awesomeness to my story and low and behold! I can't tell you anymore since it'll ruin the... plot for you, but I must say I'm very impressed myself with what I've devised for my charactors. Thanks a bundle for your inspiration!

6:00PM EST   Jun 16th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Hey I just wanted to say I did a little research on koopalings and man was that a smack in the face! After jumping on their heads for so many years how could I have forgotten them? Mario World 2 goes way back with me and I guess I had just... I don't even know, but I love that you named them too! Wendy, haha, good times, good times... Keep including the classics!

2:08PM EST   Jun 16th, 2009 — by R.M. Bray
I think it keeps track of what you write after you get 100%

3:43PM EST   Jun 14th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
You put a lot of thought into your peices, don't you? I see some who just through something together and then plant a tree about it. Or maybe that's partially what writings about. Letting the creative mind do the rest. I know for sure that I never intended on making a novel about nintendo charactors, but low and behold.

3:10PM EST   Jun 14th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Ah, sci-fi... Now that would be a challenge to my skills. Its the type of genre I find very fascinating, yet daunting at the same time. You get my drift?

12:54AM EST   Jun 14th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
So what are some of your thoughts on the new tree? Or are you keeping it a surprise? I can't wait untill I can plant a tree one day. I don't think it'll be long though, I have all summer to earn my seed!

11:42PM EST   Jun 13th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
Wow you can plant a tree now! Lucky... It takes some work to earn that seed doesn't it? I hope your story is as creative and fun as your last!

9:30PM EST   Jun 8th, 2009 — by Camille Strauss
I was just wondering if you could continue your story with 'Shells and Barrels' you know the one with Fungius? It's a great story that I can relate to and it's inspired me to write my own for 'Shells and Barrels'! I hope you at least acknowledge my requuest, no need to start writing up a storm!

8:38PM EST   May 5th, 2009 — by Mary Monkeyheart
Hey!! I just wanted to say that I like the poem you wrote in your monkey writer bio. ~~Mary MonkeyHeart~~

12:54PM EST   Apr 13th, 2009 — by Kate
Wow, am I bad at replies or what? Haha, sorry about that, hope to talk to you soon! :)

10:16PM EST   Apr 11th, 2009 — by Cowgal Utah
Oh dang it all...I can't believe that I did that. Sorry...

10:17PM EST   Mar 31st, 2009 — by Kate
Hey Michael, I haven't talked to you in a while. :) How are you? What's new? Moving very quickly to your second tree, congrats!

7:43AM EST   Mar 11th, 2009 — by kathy Higgs
Boy, you're really moving toward that 2nd seed! Goes quicker after the 1st one, huh? ~kat

12:20PM EST   Jan 17th, 2009 — by Fullmoonblue
Your snippet 'Rope' is awesome; it's almost exactly what I had in mind... And PS, publishing a Shells & Barrels inspired novel may work if you convince the Nintendo folks that yours is a 'postmodern' sort of novel... Using bits and pieces (even whole characters) from other works is done pretty widely in that genre. The closest thing to a mainstream example I can think of is 'The Hours' by Michael Cunningham, which is at least one-third taken from Virginia Woolf. Or there's stuff by Kathy Acker, who does a more edgy punk-ish ripping off of classics. Anyway, just thought to mention. Keep writing! :)

hey mike i did as u told me and looked for a chat site. i hav decided the world is just as i thought and i'm ahead of every one. by the way i shall never look for a different web site again i like this one the best and every one is how do u say. umm weird and perverted. yup this one is the best site. and plus when i am ready and less busy i shall start writing but before that i shall sharpen my writing skills bye. may the force be with you and beware of the dancing salimander throwing tofu ninjas. spooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

envy poets... happy poems? yep, its really frustrating when you cant make something how you want it to be. dont worry, theres an expression, 'the flowers of the neighbors always look redder'

10:13AM EST   Jan 9th, 2009 — by kathy Higgs
Don't knock being a fry cook/draftng student. Most great writers get their ideas by being out in the real world, not stuck in a cabin in the woods. The writing center came about because I wanted to learn from other writers and there just wasn't the opportunity here. So, in essence, I hired my own set of writing tutors and shared them with whoever would pay. It's been great, but honestly, I am learning more on this site. Keep writing, you've got talent!

1:31AM EST   Jan 9th, 2009 — by Thedeus(rorschach) Constantine

His feet hurt. His ulcer rages. He hates his wife. The risotto will take 25 minutes. Lasagna will take even longer. spooooooooooooooon

u really must be good!

3:06PM EST   Dec 31st, 2008 — by Kate
Hey thanks :). Well that's good to hear - we've got a lot of writers here and it's not often we get one who follows these snippets so passionately. I know I'm not even near to the top caliber monkeys we have here, but I can speak from interacting with them that when one comes across, it's a great thing.

2:12PM EST   Dec 31st, 2008 — by Kate
Hey Michael, I've been reading a lot of your stuff and I wanted to compliment the large amount of work you've produced in two weeks - it's great stuff and it's great to see new monkeys who take to the site so wonderfully - keep it up :). Kate

2:53PM EST   Dec 30th, 2008 — by Fullmoonblue
Great writing so far -- you've covered a lot of ground in two weeks! I hope you'll continue to share. :)

12:28PM EST   Dec 23rd, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Yeah, definitely bring them aboard! I brought an interested-in-writing friend of mine to the site, but he posted maybe a dozen snippets and bailed. The more Monkeys, the merrier.

12:04PM EST   Dec 23rd, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
Let's see, I've been at it about 3 months, so I've averaged around 3 weeks per seed. It looks like you are right around that pace, so don't let it get you down! I know it can seem to take forever, but getting to post all those snippets to earn your tree is great preparation for when you actually get to plant. That's especially true for your first seed, since it gives you the opportunity to feel around with different word lengths and different styles, seeing how trees develop when the seed is vague with no characters or specific with characters and plots laid out already. And so on! A little tip for banking the percentage points a tiny bit faster, though: post consecutive snippets. This has both the benefit of growing the thread on top of your snippets (which pushes them from twig to branch to limb to trunk that much faster) as well as spurring interest in your snippets. If you write one, then leave it alone, it could get missed, whereas if you keep posting off of it, it will be more likely to draw the attention of others who will in turn graft onto it and its successors. As somebody advised me when I joined up, that's not cheating :). Hope this has been helpful! My biggest piece of advice is just not to worry too much about the seed. Write and be happy with it, and when you do earn that seed, look at it like a bonus! And for what it's worth, you're not the only person looking forward to your first tree. You've been adding some great stuff around the site, I'm eager to see what you plant.

8:50PM EST   Dec 19th, 2008 — by Mikoto Yokoshima
XD You're welcome, but don't worry about the translator, feel free to ask whatever you'd like, but I'm not very good at Japanese so... yeah. Ask, but you might not get a good answer...

1:27PM EST   Dec 19th, 2008 — by Mikoto Yokoshima
Hajimemashite. Mikoto Yokoshima desu. Yoroshiku. Welcome to the site Leblanc-san, sorry I'm a bit late, I've been... off lately... Ja, mata.

Hey, Michael. Welcome to the site. I liked talking with you and reading your snippets. You'll do fine here and if you're seeking approval, well you have mine. (And I am a former record holder so that means alot XD)

3:12PM EST   Dec 18th, 2008 — by Harrison Bradlow
I read your Stranger posts, really great stuff! Very original, you're bringing a fresh take to the tree.
